Gates & Railings
Northumbria University2008
A winning entry to a competition brief to Design the Gates and Railings for Northumbria University's City Campus East.
The architect’s vision for the campus was to create a fusion between formality and structure of processes – the spatial side for the School of Design’s new building and the structured side for the School of Law and Newcastle Business School’s building.
The commissioned gates & railings complimented this vision, with the idea of motion and the transfer of people becoming the work’s focus. Studies into the ebb and flow of a river, creating movement with dynamic and often contorted patterns formed links with the buildings aesthetic, consisting of convex and concave exterior mesh frames. This translated into a repetitive pattern, which could be used for both the gates and railings.
